Tally Virtual User (TVU) Licensing: What You Need to Know

Meet Suresh. He runs a small trading business in Vizag.

His accountant sometimes works from home, logging into the office computer through Windows RDP to open Tally and finish the day’s entries. It felt like a small convenience. Nobody thought of it as anything else.

Then, during a routine support call, Suresh found out something he didn’t know: accessing Tally this way needs its own kind of licence, called a Tally Virtual User (TVU) pack. If you use RDP, Citrix, or a cloud server to open Tally from somewhere other than the machine it’s installed on, this rule applies to you too.

Note: this policy isn’t old news; you can ignore it. It came into effect in 2020, and it still fully applies to TallyPrime today and in 2026.

What Changed, and Why

For years, Tally was mostly a desktop product. You installed it on one computer, and you worked from that computer.

Then more businesses started using tools like Windows RDP, Citrix, and cloud servers to reach their office computer from somewhere else — home, another branch, or even another city. It’s a useful habit. It also meant more people were using Tally in a way it wasn’t originally licensed for.

So Tally Solutions introduced a new licensing category for exactly this kind of use: the Tally Virtual User (TVU) pack. This change came into effect on 1st July 2020, and it still governs virtual access to TallyPrime today.

Who Counts as a “Virtual User” of Tally?

In simple words: if you open Tally on a computer using a tool like RDP, Citrix, or a cloud/virtual server — instead of sitting directly at that computer — you’re a virtual user.

Think of the difference like this. Sitting at your own desk and opening Tally is like walking into a shop yourself. Using RDP to open Tally on the office computer from home is like sending someone to the shop on your behalf. Both get the job done, but the second one needs a different kind of pass to be allowed through the door — and that pass is the TVU.

Default Free Entitlements

The good news: you don’t need to buy a TVU pack for basic use. Every Tally license already comes with a free, lifetime entitlement built in.

So a business with both a Gold license and a Tally.Server 9 license gets 30 free TVU packs in total (20 from Server + 10 from Gold) — enough for many small and mid-sized teams without paying anything extra.

TVU vs. TSS — They’re Not the Same Thing

This is where a lot of people get confused, so let’s keep it simple.

• TSS (Tally Software Services) is your yearly subscription that keeps GST updates, e-invoicing, and connected banking working. Our TSS renewal guide covers this in full, including current 2026 pricing.
• TVU (Tally Virtual User) is a separate entitlement, specifically for accessing Tally through RDP, Citrix, or a cloud server. It doesn’t depend on whether your TSS is active or expired — the two are billed and tracked independently.

You can think of your Tally license as the car, TSS as its yearly insurance, and TVU as the permit needed if someone else is allowed to drive it from a different location. All three matter, but they cover different things.
